In the chill step, the mold is water quenched after
the casting is removed. This cools the empty mold and produces a repeatable, controlled
mold temperature for the next casting cycle.
The controlled temperature difference
between the mold and the molten metal produces a fine, dense grain structure and high
strength in each bronze casting.
