In vertical
casting the mold is upright and spinning around its vertical axis.
The vertical casting machine can be installed at floor level or in a
pit.
-
Vertical
casting is more suitable for castings with high aspect ratios
(>1), cone shapes, or
parts with features on the OD.
-
Long molds
in a vertical orientation require deep pits or high cranes, which
raises capital costs and complicates metal handling
-
Because of
the effect of gravity, vertical castings tend to have a taper
(~1/8" per foot) on the inside bore which has to be machined
out. Or higher RPMs can reduce the taper.
