In the annular type of BOP valve, the sealing
element is an elastomeric packing ring which forms the conforming seal.
- The packing is mechanically squeezed
inward to seal on either pipe (drill collars, drill pipe, casing, or tubing) or the open
hole.

The
packing ring is compressed by the upward wedging action of the hydraulically actuated
piston.
