| The Application -- Combustors serve as the
containment vessels for the mixing of fuel and air and their subsequent combustion in the
turbine engine. The combustor controls the flame and directs combustion gases into
the turbine section, while maximizing energy retention in the hot gases. |

- The combustor has to survive high temperatures,
thermal shock, high frequency acoustic loads, and attack by reducing and oxidizing gas
mixtures, sulfur, and alkaline elements
- The efficiency, reliability, durability and
reparability of the combustor are critical factors in achieving operation goals and
reducing maintenance costs, both in dollars spent and lost engine time
