In the vertical orientation, metal
flow into the plate will be restricted by the vertical rise into the mold cavity,
producing turbulence and requiring a taller riser.
- The riser will also have difficulty feeding molten metal into
the head and foot of the casting which will tend to produce shrinkage there.
- The parting line will be irregular and offset to accommodate
the angle of the plate in the mold.
