Learn about metalcasting.Often, production of steel parts by casting can yield a number of
benefits over other methods such as fabrication, forging, etc... These can include reduced leadtime, lower part weight, reduced
machining operations, fewer subassembly components, elimination of welded or fastened joints, reduced tolerance stack-up, reduced
scrap, complex internal structures can be cast into a part, complex shapes can be easily produced as castings.
SFSA, in conjunction with the American Foundrymen's Society and the American Metalcasting Consortium,
is producing a series of
practical examples in metalcasting design. These allow persons unfamiliar with production of parts by metalcasting to get
comfortable with the steps involved in designing a successful cast part.
Current examples include a cast steel One Person Hitch Housing and a cast steel
Ice Cleat for the M1 Abrams Tank.
